Though this blog is generally reserved for West Vancouver events/history/restaurants etc...only, sometimes the rules can be bent a tad.
Two Legends will be rocking the house at BC Place tonight for what will undoubtebly be the concert of the summer...if not the year. Not since Paul McCartney has there been this much anticipation for an event and to have Jay Z and Justin Timberlake collaborate for an evening should be epic! While Sir McCartney may go down as the best concert of all-time in Vancouver, these two unbelievable performers should still provide an unforgettable night.
There should be a mix of young teens to 40 somethings in the audience tonight and below is the tentative set list for tonight. If you are on the fence about going...go (see you there!).

Daikichi team including second from right (Stella Lin) and far right (David Liu).
If you are in the mood for some of the freshest sushi in the city, look no further than Daikichi Sushi in Ambleside.
David Liu and his family have owned the restaurant for 7 years located at 1739 Marine Drive, West Vancouver. He brings an infectious energy to the restaurant and really makes you feel at home.
I frequent Daikichi often and generally order the same items, but this time the exceptionally talented Stella Lin or "Itamae" (skilled sushi chef) whipped up a couple rolls which were out-of-this-world. The Golden California Roll was topped with fresh Salmon and salad dressing sauce...it was very refreshing and flavorful. Stella's favorite, The Sakura Roll, had seared Ahi Tuna on the outside and deep fried tuna in the inside. Both were some of the best sushi rolls I have ever tasted.
Whether it be lunch or dinner, Daikichi offers a great selection of fresh sushi as well as some very reasonable Specials.
Golden California Roll and Asahi Beer...delicious combo!
The bar method in West Vancouver has been open for one year and is located at 1760 Marine Drive. It is the second bar method in Canada (other location is 837 Beatty) and this form of exercise has already swept across the US and is gaining momentum in Canada.
However, with no advertising how in its first year does the West Vancouver location already have 500+ members? Simple...because it works and no form of advertising is as strong as word-of-mouth.
Studio Manager Danielle Dembicki and Instructor/Events Coordinator Emily Goodrich informed me that the bar method is a one hour class which has the same consistent flow each time. It is a "total body workout that combines isometrics, interval training, dance conditioning and sports rehabilitation to quickly and safely burn fat and carve muscle."
The class is high intensity with no impact, goes from head to toe with specific stretches in between each exercise that will work muscles to total exhaustion.
The bar method is for all fitness levels (beginner to high level athletes) as well as it is great for pregnant women. Besides better overall health, you will notice after only a month of consistent classes a more toned physique, reduced body fat, flatter abs, improved posture, increased stamina, a lifted seat and defined hamstrings.
The age range of this studio is anywhere from 13 to 70 years old, however, the main core of members are females in the 35-45 range. Variety is the spice of life and I am going to attend a class next week and will look to incorporate it into my weekly fitness program. I encourage you to attend a class and perhaps go with a friend...Emily and Danielle will take great care of you!
For more information about the bar method including class schedules please go to the website below.

It is already that time of year again....time for some World Class Fireworks!
This year's Honda Celebration of Light features the UK, Canada and Thailand for three action packed nights. Thankfully most of us in and around West Vancouver will have a vantage point of the barge in English Bay and not have to fight the crowds of 500,000+ people. It is certainly a fun time if you want to make a day/night out of it, however, don't expect to get home very early due to street closures and tons of people.
The UK kicks off the series on July 27th (Saturday), however, on the July 31st and August 3rd evenings we will be graced with the presence of Pete McLeod starting at 8:10pm. He is a Red Bull Air Race Pilot and will be tearing up the skies above Vancouver...something you truly need to see to believe. Grab your best pair of binoculars and be sure to watch this unreal pilot in action.
Enjoy the Celebration and be safe...and for more information please go to the main website below.
Thursday August 1st (7:30pm) the Silk Purse in Ambleside will have the amazingly talented and Dundarave resident Amanda Wood sing her sultry jazz tunes with local favorite and trumpet sensation Malcolm Aiken.
Amanda and Malcolm will be accompanied by drums, bass and piano for a wonderful evening of music. Both Amanda and Malcolm have been touring Internationally so this is a rare opportunity to see these exceptional artists right here in West Vancouver.
Tickets are selling fast so please go the Silk Purse Box Office (link below) as they are only $25 ($20 for members). You can also call (604) 925-7292. See you there and thank you for supporting the local Arts!
Finally, please feel free to go to Amanda and Malcolm's websites to listen to their music online.
Yet another sunny day in beautiful West Vancouver and time to take advantage of one of the hidden gems that this community has to offer. The Salmon House is an award winning restaurant (2013 OpenTable.com Diner's Choice Award Winner) with unobstructed panoramic views of Vancouver and the Burrard Inlet that will blow you away!
The food is exceptional and though perhaps obvious, my favorite dish is the Alder Grilled BC Spring Salmon; grilled to perfection by Executive Chef Mario Fortin.
Open since 1976, many people are unaware this wonderful restaurant is just north of Exit #10 waiting for your arrival. An excellent place to enjoy a glass of wine, dinner, or even weekend brunch, please go to their website below to make your reservation today.
The Harmony Arts Festival is right around the corner and there will be a blog post about this wonderful 10 day event shortly.
It has been brought to my attention by Hilary Drake, Volunteer Coordinator for the Festival that they are in need of more volunteers. This is a fantastic event to give back to our community, see new and old faces as well as enjoy fabulous music and art (as well as get a free t-shirt!).
Below is the link to the Harmony Arts Volunteer Application:

If you or anyone you know would like to be involved please sign up today as we are less than two weeks away!
Hope everyone had a great weekend...and for those at the Mason & Friends Lawn Bowling Classic how great was that event!!!
Jesse Dean Cook and fellow bowler and teammate Meghan Nichol.
As a follow-up to yesterday's blog on the West Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club I wanted to bring to your attention a great event that will be held there this Saturday (corner of Marine Drive and 20th Street).
Tim Mason is a world-class lawn bowler and plays on the Canadian National Team. You can tell when speaking to him that he has a true passion for the game and this has led to countless International Events and titles!
Tim is the man behind the Mason & Friends Charity Classic which takes place for the 6th time this Saturday, July 20th. This is a very casual and fun event to raise awareness and money for the YMCA Strong Kids Foundation. Last year $6,000 was raised and Tim and his friends are hoping to raise more this year.
Tim was nice enough to let my team of four practice on Monday evening (Meghan Nichol, John Tolkamp and Amanda Cook) and we had a blast! There might still be a couple open team slots so if you are interested please go to the link below and see if there is room to register. The weather is going to be perfect for a day of bowls and beverages!
The West Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club is tucked away on a piece of prime West Vancouver Real Estate. Most of you will drive not knowing that on the corner of 20th Street and Marine Drive is a facility and clubhouse that is second to none according to its Director (and BC Champion!) Tim Mason.
The club was established way back in 1931, and in 1934 the clubhouse was built. Membership is extremely reasonable ($100 a year for first time members) and there currently are just over 200 members. There are two unbelievable outdoor greens that run almost year-round, however, when the weather doesn't cooperate there are indoor mats in the clubhouse (as well as Bridge!).
My wife and I went for the first time on Monday to practice for the upcoming Mason & Friends Charity Classic (I'll blog about this event tomorrow). The first thing we noticed is that the balls are not round like bocce, and one side is weighted heavier than the other. Therefore, the sport is a mxture of bocce, golf putting, curling and even billiards as you factor in breaks and strategy.
For only $5.00 you can drop in and this is truly a sport for all ages. The facility is licensed (of course) so enjoying a nice cold beer while throwing bowls is as relaxing as it gets. For more information please go to the link below...why not try something new this summer!
Even with all of this sun if you are still not happy perhaps the "Happy Rock" in Dundarave will cheer you up! Located on the east side of 24th Street just south of Bellevue Avenue, all you need to do is "Just Pat Me To Be Happy."
Sounds simple enough...we tend to overcomplicate things so perhaps "pat" this rock and go for a stroll along the seawall tonight as life is pretty good here in West Vancouver.
Some of you might be wondering what yacht just travelled along the shores of West Vancouver heading west.
When a boat (or yacht) rivals the size of the many of the freighters that are anchored in the Burrard Inlet, people take notice! It was unbelievable to watch this gorgeous and amazing yacht in person and here are a few details.
The yacht is called "Serene," is 439 feet long and can be chartered for 3,750,000 Euro's per week!
The website is fantastic and I recommend taking a look: http://www.ycoyacht.com/yacht/serene/
Yesterday's post for Ambleside Day has been altered slightly due to Seahawks Familyfest!
Ambleside Day will still be from noon to 6pm and will have the following:
- Inflatable swimmer so kids can jump on it all day!
- Beach volleyball set-up
- Water safety displays
- An unreal hands-on kit from the Vancouver Aquarium that kids will love...very interactive!
Now, our good neighbors to the south and Vancouver's favorite NFL team (Seattle Seahawks) have a great weekend in store for West Vancouver residents!
Seahawks players WR Doug Baldwin, DE Red Bryant and CB Richard Sherman will visit The Village at Park Royal on July 13 for a special family friendly event, along with members of the Sea Gals, Blitz (the mascot) and Blue Thunder, the team’s drum line. More information on today's events as well as an all day interactive Gatorade sponsored event taking place at Ambleside Park on Sunday, please do to the Park Royal website below.
Between a charity car wash, Seahawks weekend and Ambleside Day, your best bet this weekend is to hit up the Village at Park Royal and Ambleside....should be a beauty. Oh...and go Hawks!
Once your car is shined up after rolling by The Light, Hope and Life Foundation Car Wash (10am start time at 1763 Bellevue Ave), park your vehicle for the day at Ambleside Beach!
The ever popular Ambleside Day takes place this Sunday (July 14th) from noon to 6:00pm at Ambleside Beach.
This is a very family friendly community day hosted at the beach to promote water safety and active lifestyles. This is a very interactive event which will include a lifeguard challenge (you have to bet on David Hasselhoff!), relay racing between kids and lifeguards, face painting, BBQ's and so much more.
So bring down the family and have yourselves a safe and relaxing weekend.
Is your ride in need of a wash this weekend? Instead of going to an automatic car wash why not help support a wonderful Charity this Sunday July 14th from 10:00am - 4:00pm!
This is the 2nd Annual Light, Hope and Life Foundation Car Wash and this year's event will take place at the West Vancouver Masonic Hall (1763 Bellevue Ave close to John Lawson Park).
Light, Hope and Life Foundation is a wonderful local charity, founded in 2007 and registered in 2010 as an official charity of Canada. Their mission is to help underprivileged children in impoverished countries with their educational needs by dispersing funds to registered charities that share their common goal in enabling children to freely shape their futures. The Foundation organizes various events throughout the year to reach their lofty goals and partners with different charities such as Free the Children, SOS Children's Villages and most recently Education Beyond Borders.
Last year they raised $1,000 during the car wash...let's try and double that this year!

If you are tired of taking Spot, Dusty, Diggity or Fred (love the human names for dogs) for the usual stroll around the block it is time to take advantage of this summer weather and head down to the amazing Dog Park at Ambleside Beach!
With so much space and so many other dogs to play with, your hound will be sound asleep the minute you get home. For us humans, there is so much action in the Burrard Inlet these days with all of the Cruise Ships, Yachts, Sailboats, Power Boats and even paddle-boarders going by. Ambleside Dog Park is truly one of the most wonderful places to spend an afternoon.
There is a great .pdf document that The City of West Vancouver has created and I have attached the link below for your convenience. It outlines everything you need to know and the few rules that you need to abide by. Enjoy your summer everyone!
Twogether Hair Design has been a fixture of the Dundarave community for the better part of 30 years! Owners John Hrabi and Steve Harvath have a loyal customer following of both women and men at their salon located at 2457 Marine Drive in the heart of the Dundarave Village.
While I may not play soccer like Beckham, John and Steve have done an amazing job in styling my hair like Becks!
If you are looking for a change in Salon at a reasonable price with fantastic results, give John or Steve a call at (604) 926-5224 and book your appointment today.
There will be 12 artists (4 ceramic artists, 4 painters, 2 photographers and 2 multimedia artists) on Sunday July 7th that will display their work for everyone to see in and around Horseshoe Bay. The event will take place between 11:00am and 4:00pm and given the weather forecast I would walk the event which should take ~45mins to 1 hour. There is a free shuttle bus as well that departs from the Gleneagles Community Centre parking lot every half hour starting at 11:00am and will circle a route so that you can view all 12 artists.
For more information about the artists please click on the link below. Also, a map with addresses for each artist has been provided below.
Owner Matt Giannakos is about to start making me one of his famous Cafe Lattes.
When seeking out the perfect coffee shop people are generally looking for: (1) great coffee, (2) freshly baked in-house goods, (3) a friendly and outgoing staff and (4) a prime location. Cafe Crema is batting 4 for 4 and even more!
Matt Giannakos and his family have owned Cafe Crema located on the corner of 15th St and Bellevue Ave for 6 years. While his brothers work at their other great Cafe (Revolver in Gastown) and his parents are back and forth, Matt is forced to have a view of the ocean on a daily basis! There is a loyal customer base at Crema and many sit on the patio to sip their tasty beverages, or choose to get one to-go and walk along the seawall which is literally across the street.
While my go-to morning order is a Cafe Latte (delicious), the signature coffee according to Matt and his lovely staff is the Cafe Crema. When paired with their most popular in-house baked good (blueberry muffin) you are sure to get your day off to a great start.
If you are a VIP (or like to think you are), try ordering "The Gibralter" which is something that is not on the menu but sure to make you feel like a rock star. And, if you go to Cafe Crema enough times they may even name a drink after you which is the case when ordering "The Super Sara" aptly named after Dr. Sara Kinnon, owner of Bellevue Natural Health Clinic!
Whether it be breakfast, lunch, or a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, give Cafe Crema a try...you'll love it. Make it a great day everyone and please go to the links below for more information on both Giannakos locations.
Diana Krall and her husband Elvis Costello are certainly two of the most well known celebrities that call West Vancouver home.
Born in Nanaimo, BC, Diana has become one of the most well known Jazz Pianists of our generation winning numerous awards including five Grammy's. In 2003 Diana was given an honorary Ph. D from UVic; in 2005 she was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame and in 2005 she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Married in 2003 (at Elton John's London estate), Diana and Elvis have formed a wonderful partnership as they have collaborated on a number of songs. Diana and Elvis are both touring Europe over the summer and hopefully Vancouver will be a stop on their North American legs towards the end of 2013.
For more information about each artist as well as how to purchase music (as well as Diana's critically acclaimed 2012 Album "Glad Rag Doll") please click on the links below.
